Remembering Dr. Alison R. Bernsteinrsiroky
The Rutgers Center for Gender, Sexuality, Law and Policy, mourns the loss of our friend and colleague Dr. Alison R. Bernstein, director of the Institute for Women’s Leadership (IWL) at Rutgers and a faculty affiliate of CGSLP. Throughout her inspiring career, Dr. Bernstein vigorously supported multidisciplinary and intersectional dialogue about gender- and sexuality-based equity. Through IWL, Dr. Bernstein co-sponsored with CGSLP the major conference last fall, “Rutgers Celebrates Beijing+20.”
Since 2011, Dr. Bernstein led IWL as its director, with her trademark dynamism and vision. Prior to that, she was Vice President for the Ford Foundation’s program on Knowledge, Creativity and Free Expression, capping off nearly three decades at the foundation. Dr. Bernstein also served as Associate Dean of Faculty at Princeton University and taught at Princeton, Teacher’s College/Columbia University, Sangamon State University (now the University of Illinois, Springfield), Spelman College, and Staten Island Community College. You may learn more about Dr. Bernstein’s brilliant work and legacy from the New York Times and this tribute in Rutgers Today. Our thoughts and hearts are with Alison’s partner, Johanna, her daughters, Julia and Emma, and our friends at IWL. We share in the profound sorrow over Alison’s passing and are deeply grateful for her leadership, scholarship, vision, dedication, and friendship.
In lieu of flowers, Dr. Bernstein’s family has asked for charitable gifts in her honor to be made to the Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair at Rutgers University. Gifts may be made to Rutgers University Foundation online or by mail to Gloria Steinem Endowed Chair, c/o Lisa Hetfield, Institute for Women’s Leadership, 162 Ryders Lane, New Brunswick NJ, 08901.
